Handbook for Swimmers and their Families

Swimming with the Titans

Welcome to the Sanford YMCA Titans. Our swimmers are ages 6 and up and come from the towns of Sanford, Acton, Wells, Alfred, Lyman, Limerick, Waterboro, Newfield, Shapleigh, Hollis, Kennebunk, Saco, Dayton, Lebanon and North Berwick..

We invite children who love the water and enjoy the challenge of learning new skills to join. We believe that racing is a fun way to learn about our potential greatness!

We hope that Titans make swimming a part of the rest of their lives and learn what it takes to achieve their dreams.

We are committed to working as a team in preparation and performance. Supporting each other is a big part of our program.

Titans are also known throughout the state as friendly and decent people. We want all Titans to master the value of respect: for teammates, for competitors; and for all those adults that make it possible for them to participate in this sport.

 The Coaching Staff

Head Coach: Mardie LaRiviere

Assistant Coach: Kate Jeton "I graduated from Colby in 1981 with a B.A. in art and art history. I was a teaching associate at Colby and then continued as an independent school teacher at a Quaker School in Ohio from 1981 - 83; I taught art, lived in the dorm, coached, worked on the farm associated with the school... From 1983-85 I attended Indiana University where I did all the course work for my masters degree in art history (which I never completed the thesis for...); I had a teaching assistance ship at I.U. After graduate school I worked at Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, MA - teaching art and art history, living in the dorm, working in the admissions office and running student activities (an important thing in a boarding school); from there I went to The Madeira School in McLean, VA where I was a teacher first and then became a Dean during my second year. I was Dean there for 3 years (years there 1986-1990) and then went to Dana Hall in Wellesley, MA where I was Dean of Students (and art history teacher) for four years (1990-94). After Luke was born I went back to Dana (from 1997-2000) to be the Director of the Riding Program, an auxiliary enterprise of the school offering lessons to students of the school and individuals from the surrounding community - we taught about 250 lessons a week. From the time I was 15 I have been involved with students in some capacity or another, whether it was teaching riding, or art or art history, volunteering in Luke's school, working in a supervisory situation, and most recently with the Titans. My own swimming experience started at a very young age - lessons around 2, racing on a summer league team by 5 until I was 11 and started going to camp in the summers. I started swimming again about 6 years ago and swim 3 or 4 times a week "

Assistant Coach Jessica Giberti "I have been a swimmer for over 20 years. I joined the Sanford Titans when I was 10 years old, and continued to swim competitively as a member of the Titans and a member of the Noble High swim team. Upon graduation I spent much of my freshman year of college establishing a swim club at the University of Hartford, in West Hartford Connecticut. Swimming had become a part of me. During breaks from college I worked as a Y camp counselor and a substitute teacher for local schools. It was my time as a camp counselor and a substitute that lead me into the teaching profession. I am currently a 5th grade teach at Acton Elementary School. I spent much of my childhood at the YMCA; it was an overwhelmingly positive part of my life. When my husband and I decided to settle in Alfred and start a family, I knew the Y would be a part of their lives as well. I began bringing my two boys, currently 8 and 10, to the Y to teach them how to swim. I was hired by the YMCA in 2003 to teach swim lessons. I taught both at the YMCA and off site at Bunganut Lake and Limerick Rec. In the summer of 2004, after my son joined the swim team, I was asked to coach for the Titans. I have been involved with the team ever since. I currently have my lifeguarding certification, CPR/First Aid training, and am a registered USA swim coach. I am honored to be part of the dedicated and talented coaching staff of the Sanford YMCA Titans."

Assistant Coach Cathy L'Heureux "I majored in Nursing and Biology and received the Scholar Athlete Award (MVP for a DIV III school 2 years and qualified for ECAC's in the 400 meter).  I went to UNE for my Master's of Science in Anesthesia. Throughout these years I still continued to swim on my own and run on my own. After UNE, I passed my anesthesia boards and took a position down in Raleigh, North Carolina.  After being in Raleigh for 6 years, it came time to move back to Maine to be closer to our family.  I took a 4 day overnight swim clinic together in New Paltz, New York put on by Total Immersion (TI) Swimming.  Currently, I am working at Mercy Hospital in the Anesthesia Department.I am board certified in nurse anesthesia and also hold certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and am a Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Provider. I am currently in the process of obtaining my Safety Training for Swim Coaches through USA swimming.

 Ways Parents Can Help

Parents may help by having established practice days and encouraging their child to be early and prepared. A child should know which day is swimming day and which day is not and attendance should be a matter of routine.  Just showing up is the most important habit that will promote success.    Parents are swimmers’ biggest advocates. We coaches appreciate your devotion to your swimmers. You can help your child and the team by:

1.         Informing coaches of illness or other disruptions to the practice routine.

2.         Directing your child to consult with the coach on his/her questions and concerns. Even if you wish to pave the way by speaking with the coach first, your child should be taught to go to the coach with coaching issues.

3.       Creating and sticking to a practical practice schedule. Be kind to your child and get them to practice 15 minutes early.

4.         Please supervise your young children in the locker room and be ready for them at the end of practice.

5.         You may watch from the bleachers or the lobby. Unless there is a safety issue, please do not attempt to coach from those positions.

6.         A parent who believes in his or her child is one of the best assets a child has. Be willing to let them try and fail, and then try again. Progress takes time and many attempts. Sometimes failure is the best teacher.
